Designing for Impact

Sarah Edwards, Managing Director UK at Leicht Contracts, shares her passion for design, overcoming challenges, and championing diversity in the built environment.

What do you find most interesting about working in this industry?

Whether it’s emphasising the psychology of colour, carbon free living, home ergonomics or the art of spatial management, there are endless possibilities to explore in the world of design and I find this to be the most interesting aspect of our industry… complete freedom!  I strongly believe that independent, intelligent spaces are now more important than ever, so this Is a big part of determining my personal style. With so much variety in the contracts market, I am always taking inspiration and design markers from each and every project we supply, and I get a massive buzz from delivering unique projects that genuinely make a difference to the built environment and future landscape of London.

How would you define success?

I would say that overcoming a challenge is a good measure of success. For instance, my most challenging project to work on was towards the end of a 10 Block private residential tower scheme in Southwest London and it has been my biggest success to date! The initial challenge was project delivery due to the nationwide COVID-19 restrictions, and so we needed to avoid causing delays and maintain a high level of service for our discerning client, the developer. We were also faced with other challenges throughout this project like being able to effectively navigate the supply-chain crisis – from raw materials to order fulfilment – and keep pace with program demand. With this in mind, I would define success as being able to face a challenge and overcome it.

Who did you most admire when growing up and why?

That would have to be Aunt Nikki. She has the highest emotional intelligence of anyone I have ever met. She is not afraid to be her own individual and bright self, and she has dedicated her life to helping other people’s mental health. Nikki has always been a constant support for our entire family, in her role as a children’s counsellor. She now works as an advocate for the vulnerable. My aunt has taught me to be direct and genuine, which has really helped me in my career and personal life… thank you Nikki!

What would be your first big purchase if you won millions?

I am an avid shark and ocean life enthusiast, and have been very fortunate to visit the Maldives and swim with the world’s third largest population of Manta-rays. This is my absolute favourite holiday destination, so I think this would be my first purchase followed by a stay at my favourite hotel, Pumba Safari Lodge in South Africa, which is the ultimate destination for experiencing an authentic African Safari.
