Showhome Editor, Anna Wood, catches up with Futurebuild Event Director, Martin Hurn, to discuss all things Futurebuild

Martin Hurn takes time out of his busy schedule to chat to Showhome Editor, Anna Wood, about what’s to come at the highly anticipated event. With so much going on over the three days of the event, Martin Hurn draws attention to the biggest themes, what challenges the industry is currently facing, and how the sector is able to tackle this.

Q1 What can we expect from the upcoming Futurebuild?

Futurebuild has always been about driving change and while sustainability has been at the heart of the event for 16 years, we are more committed than ever to ensure our built environment remains on track to achieving our net-zero goals. We often talk about making a change and making a difference but unless we put our intentions out there and give a real focus to it, these things can get forgotten about. Futurebuild 2023 is about “Taking a Stand” for a better built environment as part of a campaign which puts the emphasis on working together to make a positive difference. Our event’s core is sustainability and reaching net zero, but if you’re equally as passionate about diversity or bridging the construction skills gap as you are innovation or improved building standards, Futurebuild will provide the stage to showcase that commitment and take a stand.

Q2 What will be the biggest themes present at the event?

The Take a Stand campaign is central to Futurebuild 2023 but running through everything we do is the drive for innovation and sharing knowledge. At the heart of this is our conference programme, which this year is sponsored by SRNG and Hub Brussels. As is our tradition, we are really excited about bringing together a stellar line-up of expert speakers who are distinguished experts in their field to deliver the best possible understanding of what collectively we all need to do to meet our climate challenges. The first day will focus on ‘Looking Forward’ and why we need to develop the foresight necessary to break out of our current mindset. On day two, the conference will explore the nature of ‘Changing’, especially behaviour change. Day three will move on to ‘Taking Action’, hearing from those who have been doing just that and exploring plans that can take society and the construction industry forward. Across our eight show sections we have stages delivering our most ambitious seminar programme that is bringing together the most innovative and forward-thinking brands from across the world to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the built environment. Some key seminar themes up for debate are net zero, the scale and pace of retrofit and sustainable infrastructure.

Q3 What do you think are the biggest trends in the industry?

Innovation is critical, so much so that from past show research, around 75% of attendees state they attend to discover new ideas and innovations. If we are to build a better future, we have to look for new innovations, new methods of construction, new materials and new ways of creating buildings. Futurebuild provides the platform to bring these innovations to market…
