New build construction security

How can developers best secure their construction sites both pre and post development. A look at construction security.

The construction process is one that faces many hurdles. Whether that be running behind schedule, accruing additional costs that weren’t accounted for, or safety on the worksite, something is always bound to crop up. One of the biggest problems on construction sites is security, both during building hours, as well as when the site is closed for the night. Because sites contain valuables with high resale prices, they can become a place of high interest to criminals. Every year the construction industry loses £400 million through theft, so security on these sites is of utmost importance, especially when dealing with people’s future homes.

Criminal activity in a construction site presents several threats, to operations, to property and materials, and in the worst-case scenarios, to life. Crime leads to disruptions in the construction process, putting construction well behind schedule to deal with the problem, as well as costing companies a lot of extra money. Theft is a massive waste of money in the construction sector, property and materials are damaged and stolen, and what has been stolen can usually be sold on for a high value as the price of building equipment remains high. While theft is a large portion of the crime that occurs on construction sites, arson attacks aren’t too uncommon. Around 40% of fires on construction sites are caused by arson attacks, which can destroy the site, as well as injure anyone around, especially if the fire spreads.

Crime on a construction site can lead to more than just a loss of money, it can also lead to the loss of lives. As previously mentioned, arson can cause damage beyond the construction site if it spreads and can cause harm those who live nearby. Also, when trespassers enter the site and cause damage to fixtures and wiring, the damage caused can potentially injure, or even kill, themselves or construction workers who are unaware of the damage that was caused. Trespassers often climb scaffolding, which they can fall off and injure themselves on, or they can damage the scaffolding and make it dangerous for construction workers who will later be using it in their job.

The presence of security on construction sites is important to ensure crime levels remain low, as well as ensuring that the site remains a safe place.

Types of security

There are many options for an increased security presence on a site, whether it be through operational security measures or physical security measures. In order to make a site secure it is a good idea to combine types of security for added safety…
