Watt’s up with lighting?

Showhome magazine takes a look at some of the biggest industry trends that are set to take centre stage in the lighting sector in the new year

Lighting brings the finishing touches to a home. It sets the scene and the mood of each room. Whether a large room is bedazzled with a chandelier, or a minimalistic interior finished off with a lone exposed lightbulb, or different coloured lightbulbs to match the interior of a room, lighting is the cherry on the cake. Without lighting, a room cannot be considered to be finished, so it shouldn’t be seen as an afterthought. Lighting is an essential ingredient in designing an interior.

Of course, planning where furniture sits in a room, and where natural lighting from the windows will sit and splay out across the room is an important step in the designing process, but the artificial lighting that is brought into a home needs more consideration than it often gets. The atmosphere difference between a room full of lamps, and a room that is illuminated with just one single, very bright ceiling light, is very different. Depending on the atmosphere and style one is going for in a particular room, different lighting options make more sense than others.

But of course, trends in lighting, like in every other facet of design, constantly change and evolve. Year after year, interior design trends adapt and change with the times, and along with them lighting trends also change. As different interiors wish to evoke a multitude of emotions and atmospheres, the lighting that accompanies these styles changes and adapts.

The trend cycle constantly revives trends from years past, so it was only a matter of time until Art Deco would take over again. Art Deco is already making its comeback in the interior design space and is set to take over the lighting sector.

While Art Deco has made its comeback multiple times throughout the years, the trend in lighting is something new for 2023. Pendant lighting will be drawing upon more subtle details from the Art Deco movement. These details include soft scalloped edges, hints of marble, and dashes of brass. By using dashes of glamour in an art deco inspired room, such as hints of marble and the use of brass, the style goes from looking like it should be left in the past, to a fresh take on the style. Glass lighting is taking the scalloped style, adopting a softer version of the design trend.

Natural materials

Sustainability is a drum that keeps on beating. We all know the importance of sustainability and sustainable materials, but in 2023 the trend of sustainable and natural materials will transfer over to the lighting market…
