New Sustainability Director looking to challenge perceptions

Underlining its commitment to growing a sustainable business, one of the UK’s largest homebuilders has appointed a new Group sustainability director.

Redrow Homes has recruited Robert Macdiarmid to maximise awareness of its commitment to responsible development while helping the business drive ambitious expansion plans.

Bringing with him 17 years of experience in the construction industry, Robert has worked with a range companies including global design, engineering and project management consultancy Atkins and international construction and associated services VINCI. Specialising in developing coherent strategies to ensure businesses realise their full potential, his aim at Redrow is to deliver shared value to shareholders, communities, customers and employees.

He said: “Redrow already has an excellent reputation as an organisation that takes real pride in the homes it builds and the communities it creates. We now have the opportunity to take the business forward in a growing property market and deliver even greater benefits for those connected to us including our customers, staff and shareholders.

“We have a job to do to build more homes, but we don’t want that to be at the expense of existing communities. We want to encourage community cohesion at every stage, provide homes for a mix of people, and that, in turn, will deliver real benefits to local economies and value for our business.”

Over recent years Redrow has been making great strides in creating a more sustainable business. It recently received a silver award from NextGeneration, an independent organisation which benchmarks the UK’s 25 housebuilders, moving it up to fifth in the rankings.

The FTSE 250 housebuilder also scored the maximum ‘Three Trees’ from WWF for its commitment to using sustainable timber and last year won the 2014 Green Award at the Daily Post Business Awards. Redrow has also formed partnerships with conservation organisations including the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and the RSPB to create wildlife friendly habitats around its office and developments.

John Tutte, Group chief executive for Redrow Homes, said: “Robert has many years of experience working in the sustainability field and joins us from Atkins where he was global head of corporate sustainability.  He will be leading the Group’s sustainability agenda and raising our profile in this important area.”
