Continuing the Caerphilly Keys housing scheme

Proposals to continue pioneering a private sector leasing scheme have been endorsed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Housing and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee.

Scrutiny Committee members considered proposals to continue delivering the council’s Caerphilly Keys initiative during a remote meeting held on 9 February, as an alternative to adopting a new Welsh Government leasing scheme.

Caerphilly Keys has been successfully delivered by the council’s Housing Solutions team for over three years.  The scheme matches people to suitable properties, then offers free support to both the tenant and landlord to sustain the tenancy.

There are currently over 100 properties registered with the scheme and the project has helped many families and individuals who would otherwise have found themselves homeless, including rehousing those who were previously rough sleeping.

Cllr Shayne Cook, the council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care and Housing, said “Caerphilly Keys was the first of its kind for a local authority in Wales and we’re extremely pleased Scrutiny Committee members have supported proposals for it to continue.

The scheme is a well established and trusted model which offers a wealth of benefits and has a proven track record in preventing homelessness, whilst also helping private landlords find suitable tenants for their homes.”
