Trudie McCormick, Technical Development Director at Keepmoat, discusses changes within the housing industry and the importance of sustainable technologies with Showhome Editor, Joseph Clarke
Trudie, can you share a bit about your journey and how you became the Technical Development Director at Keepmoat?
My career at Keepmoat started in 2015, when I joined the business as Head of Product Development before progressing to Technical Development Director. Having originally trained as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, I have more than 40 years’ experience working within the housing industry, and held roles with several organisations in the sector.
I’ve always taken an interest in sustainable housing and developed a passion for both eco-friendly design and low carbon performance, which led me to train as an Eco Homes and Code Assessor. The values underpinned from this feed into Keepmoat’s vision of building communities and transforming lives, and our sustainability commitments contribute towards the delivery of this vision.
With your extensive knowledge of the housing industry, what significant changes have you witnessed over the past decade?
Over the past few years, the industry has experienced notable changes as we work towards the delivery of truly sustainable developments. This focuses not only on the delivery of high-quality, low carbon homes that are sympathetic to nature, but also on the health and wellbeing of the people living in them by creating places that support flexible lifestyles, such as working from home.
Working towards the introduction of the Future Homes Standard has been a pivotal turning point for the housing industry, in order for it to support the UK Government in meeting its climate targets, including the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
These new standards reflect the growing emphasis on sustainability within the industry and aims to reduce the impact building homes has on our environment by tasking housebuilders with adopting more eco-friendly practices and materials. In addition, the Future Homes Standard also pledges to reduce energy costs for homeowners and, ultimately, future-proof the UK’s housing stock to ensure we have enough homes to cater for generations to come.
