Glow heated glass by Tuffx

Taking bi-folds to the next multifunctional level, Glow comprises a sealed unit layered with an intelligent, invisible conductive coating that is electrically heated to convert electric power to emit radiant heat into the home. Made in Britain, these energy-efficient glass units utilise infrared technology and, for ease of use and efficiency, they are thermostatically controlled, creating ambient temperatures perfect for installation within aluminium bi-folding door systems.

Offering the ideal balance between thermal comfort and aesthetics, Glow has no visible trace of a heating system inside. The coatings used are completely undetectable, so from a homeowner’s perspective, the glass will look the same as that found in any other bi-fold door.

Glow heated glass system is fully compliant too, conforming to EN12150 and EN1279 Parts 1-4 and is an ideal solution to meet the needs of the upcoming Future Homes Standard as it’s a direct replacement for the soon-to-be-obsolete gas heating systems. With an emphasis on retaining heat efficiently, Glow boasts impressive U Values as low as 0.7m2/K, ensuring optimal warmth without the risk of overheating.

The glass surface temperatures reach 35-40°C and are controlled via a wall-mounted thermostat, allowing Glow to become the primary heat source. This radiant heat technology has an average hourly cost of around 9p per bi-fold door, so, for example, a three-door bi-fold configuration running for five hours per day will cost around £1.35 (based on an electricity cost of 25p/kWh). Glow installation costs are lower than electric underfloor heating or traditional radiators, making it a more budget-friendly option.

Heated glass also dramatically reduces condensation, preserving uninterrupted views and potentially contributing to a healthier indoor environment. It also prevents mould or mildew growth and leads to clearer windows, which benefits those with respiratory issues. Glow glass also helps preserve the penetration of natural light, allowing homeowners to feel the full benefit of natural light pouring into the property.

For ease of sequencing, as Glow heated glass units are glazed similarly to conventional double glazed units, installation is as standard, then the electrical connections simply need to be carried out by a qualified electrician directly into the properties’ 240v mains supply. Another key benefit is that Glow doesn’t need regular maintenance, providing a hassle-free heating solution compared to a traditional radiator or underfloor heating system, which requires regular balancing and servicing. In addition, Glow removes the need for wall-hung heat emitters, freeing up space where traditional radiators would need to be placed enhancing interior layout opportunities.

Glow heated glass is also available for infill panels within a roof structure, often installed within kitchen or family rooms, allowing occupants to benefit from natural daylight. By incorporating Glow into these panels, the roof glazing will not only illuminate the space throughout the day but will also be the radiant heat source for the space during the colder months.
