Cover Story – Altaterra

Altaterra

Could you tell us more about Altaterra, the history of the company, and its goals for the future?

Altaterra was founded in 2001 as part of the VELUX Group. Although we operate as a separate entity, the two companies have complementary identities and goals. The VELUX Group is owned by VKR Holding A/S, a limited company that’s owned by non-profit, charitable foundations and a family with over 80 years in the roof window sector.

We launched our flagship brand Dakea in 2012, which is targeted at trade professionals and provides a high quality and affordable roof window solution to the market.

We have just celebrated our 20-year anniversary as a company, and 10 years as the Dakea brand.

What is your marketplace priority for Altaterra and its brands?

As Altaterra, we believe in making daylight and fresh air affordable to everyone, so that more people can enjoy well-being and a healthier life at home, work or in education. Our customers range from window installers to traditional and online merchants of construction materials right through to large house building companies. We fulfill the needs of these customer segments through several brands, with Dakea being our flagship brand.

How are you working to ensure sustainability is a core value across Altaterra’s business?

Taking everyone with us on Altaterra’s sustainability journey is a core part of our strategy. We founded the WeCare Team in 2019 to drive awareness of and engagement with our sustainability strategy within the walls of the company. By supporting our internal communications and events the WeCare Team helps to engage employees in becoming sustainability catalysts. This power of purpose is the glue which binds our company together.

From your experience, what are the best things to do to increase focus on sustainability in the construction industry?

According to the Climate Change Commission, buildings are responsible for 59% of UK electricity consumption, equivalent to a further 31 MtCO₂e of indirect emissions. That means that in the construction industry we have a big responsibility to reduce carbon emissions in order to meet the climate goals set out by the UN in the Paris Agreement.

At Altaterra we believe that while having a long-term view, we can and should start solving some of tomorrow’s big sustainability challenges today. This path, on the one hand, requires collaboration with experts – such as the Science Based Targets Initiative – to set our realistic and meaningful ambitions and on the other, embedding the purpose in the company culture, so to become as sustainable as we can be.
