Showhome investigates what’s cooking in the world of kitchen trends, and which 2022 trends have reached boiling point

The year is finally coming to a close, the nights are drawing in and people are preparing for the festivities that the end of the year brings. Saying goodbye to the current year means newness is coming. Trends are being announced and discussed left right and centre, and the kitchen space is no different. Something can be trendy one minute and not the next, and with something as solid as a kitchen, it means that people want to bank in on trends early in the year in order to not miss the boat.

Since the pandemic, the kitchen has become the hub of the home. Before this time, the kitchen was simply a place where people prepared food and got drinks from the fridge. As the pandemic meant more people spent more time at home, the kitchen became a social hub. Whether that be to bake with the entire family, or host dinner parties with close friends, the kitchen had a lot more foot fall than ever before. This trend has remained, and if anything, is getting more popular. With the cost-of-living driving people away from going out, people are going back to spending more time at home and entertaining within their homes.

So what is trendy in the kitchen space for the upcoming year?

Colours

Colour in the kitchen is in. The time for plain and simple kitchens is out and instead people are embracing colour to boost their moods. It’s out with the stark whites and dull greys, and in with pops of colour that bring joy to anyone who enters the room. The colours that top the trends list for the upcoming year are oranges, reds, yellows, as well as greens.

As people are spending more time in the kitchen, and looking for a refresh for the new year, colour is the perfect way to start. Whether re-kitting an entire kitchen, or just wanting to give it a new lease of life for the new year, colour will be making a lively appearance. And it’s not only walls that get the makeover. There will be a huge upswing in colourful cabinets, for the customers that wish for a more permanent colour injection in the room. Though if not brave enough to design an entirely colourful kitchen, small bursts of colour are encouraged from colourful taps to small appliances like kettles and toasters.

After a long time of neutrals being in style, it was only going to be some time before colours took the top spot in the kitchen.

Au Naturale

In the upcoming year, there will be a big emphasis on bringing the outdoors in. People are very keen on surrounding themselves with natural materials and bringing the warmth of the outdoors and a more rustic aesthetic inside. This is probably caused by the trend of sustainability throughout the sector, which has led to people wanting to use natural materials, especially wood, inside the kitchen.

A big trend will be dark stained wood, and natural timber tones throughout the kitchen. This will mainly be focused on furniture and cabinets within the kitchen, but some may go as far as installing wooden panelling on walls to evoke a traditional, natural atmosphere. Natural wooden tones are seeing a return, which brings a lovely counter-balance to the saturated colours that are also coming back, as spoken about previously.

The genius of wooden interiors within the kitchen, is whilst they may go in and out of the trend cycle, they remain a strong and classic choice. Wooden interiors feel lived in, making a house feel like a home…
