Open House – David Simpson

David Simpson, Channel Director, Moores Furniture Group

What was the first you wanted to do when you were a child?

I always wanted to be a professional chef, long before superstar chefs hit our TV screens, Fanny Cradock was still in her prime and Michelin star restaurants were few and far between. I have an early recollection that for my birthday when I was probably only 4 or 5 I got a whisk a rolling pin and best of all a white tall chef’s hat and apron, I was over the moon!

How did you end up working in the housebuilding industry?

In the early 2000s I fancied a change and left a management role in Contract Furniture to work for Speedy Hire in order to help manage an acquisition of a plant arm for a well-known Construction Company. This morphed into a Key Account Managers role and eventually a Directors position in the business.

If you were given a day off to shadow another job in another industry, which would it be and why?

My daughter works for a large engineering consultancy business who work with the MOD on strategic projects but tells me she can’t talk to me about it as its confidential and “she’d have to kill me”. I’d like to see why and get a feel for her day to day which I’m sure would be intense and interesting.

What 3 words would your best friend use to describe you?

Trustworthy, opinionated, compassionate.

What is your favourite part of the weekend?

Apart from long walks on the moors with my lovely wife and our Patterdale Terrier I read so much data and correspondence at work that I rarely pick up a book nowadays other than when on holiday. I do like some quiet time most Saturdays to sit in a coffee shop or sometimes even a bar and read a paper front to back with no interruptions other than sipping at a cup of tea or a cold Guinness.

What are your hopes and expectations for the rest of the year?

I’m a recent reluctant owner of 2 properties as my current house fell through at the last minute but I decided to still proceed with the new one. As I know all too well from my day job, interest rates and the cost of living has slowed the market so it’s hard to sell right now. I’m hopeful that these will ease at some point soon, I sell my house and that the market generally improves for all.
