Showhome sits down with Nikki Davis, Principal and CEO at Leeds College of Building.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
I work across two industries – construction and education. For construction, it would be the external perception of the sector. It’s so much more vibrant and broader than people outside of the sector know. For education, it would be the constant need for Further Education to have to shout to be heard alongside schools and universities. Hundreds of thousands of students study in FE colleges across the country, yet policy makers, media, and others seem to forget about them.
What three traits define you?
Calmness, determination, and being analytical.
What’s the coolest trend in the industry today?
Not sure it’s the coolest trend, but sustainability and zero carbon are part of everyday discussions right now, and that’s essential if we are to do anything close to what’s needed to reduce global temperatures.
How do you define success?
Success for Leeds College of Building is seeing any student progress towards their chosen career. This could be the student who finally achieves the GCSE grade they need to access a Higher Apprenticeship, or the national award winners at events like the SkillBuild multi-trade competition.
What would you most like to tell your 13-year-old self?
Don’t worry – it’s wasted energy.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
Probably…
