Trends and Challenges in Interior Doors for New Builds

Paul King, Marketing Director at Vicaima Limited, discusses the latest trends and challenges in interior door solutions for new builds, addressing aesthetics, sustainability, and technology.

What are the current trends in interior door solutions that are most impacting the new build homes market?

I suppose one of the most fundamental changes to occur in recent times, in relation to the specification of interior doors for the new build homes market is the much wider the adoption of

complete door kits as opposed to the installation of doors into a basic lining or frame on site.  Certainly, the lack of sufficiently skilled and readily available labour on site is one reason for this switch, however more importantly, housebuilders recognise the value of consistent and performance driven door solutions, especially in relation to security and fire safety, which naturally come with factory assembled components that leave nothing to chance, as they are assembled under strict calibration and regulatory scrutiny.

Of course, aesthetics play a significant role in the decision making process and here again we see fashion trends moving in new directions. Contrary to perceived wisdom, modern house builders are not fixated with simple primed door models or ones that evoke a bygone Georgian era.  They are widely adopting both colour and texture to invigorate housing interiors and create the perfect ambience for a new generation of homeowners and occupiers.

In recent years, how have the expectations and demands of homeowners and builders evolved when it comes to interior door designs and finishes in new builds?

Today’s developers have a real understanding of their target audience and their desire to set themselves apart, with cost effective yet innovative design solutions very much in evidence in their specification.  This ‘think outside the box’ approach is leading to a distinct uptick in the appeal of doors that not only look good, but which offer a sensory appeal in the form of touch.  Having a textural surface adds another dimension to interiors and no more so than when used in doors, as the need to traverse between spaces affords greater interaction with the door surface.

As a leading player, supplying thousands of pre-finished interior timber doors and door kits to housebuilders and developers large and small, we have gained an insight into trends first hand. In recognition of this mood changer, Vicaima have extended their offering within the ever-popular Dekordor 3D Range, with its highly tactile yet durable selection of vertical and horizontal flush doors.  While this range embraces the full spectrum of tones from pale to dark, one finish in particular is perhaps already showing the hallmarks of a real trend-setter!  Born out of a fashion that Oak could be less yellow, the all new 3D Honey Oak is proving a worthy contender.  With its rich yet light vertical grained surface it offers a standout feature for any room and a sustainable, cost-effective door solution. In addition, and irrespective of its obvious aesthetic attributes, these doors are available with fire, security and acoustic performance, thereby ticking every box for forward thinking house builders looking to move with the times.
