An Essex-based housebuilder is celebrating topping out the first apartment building at new development in Chelmsford city centre.

Bellway, which is building 152 new apartments at Novello off Victoria Road, has completed the roof of Fresca House, the first phase of the development, with interior work now being completed within the building ready for the first residents to move in at the end of the year.

The early stages of construction are now underway on three other blocks – Vivace, Giovane and Moderna Houses – which will also comprise one and two-bedroom apartments.

The apartment buildings will be set within landscaped grounds including a pocket park and podium gardens.

Jenny Walker, Sales Director of Bellway Essex, said: “Putting the roof on Fresca House at Novello truly transforms the site and means buyers can get a really good idea of what the development will look like.

“Chelmsford is a great place to buy a first home and at Novello, all the amenities of the city are practically on the doorstep. Within a five-minute walk are the city’s two shopping centres, as well as supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and the local leisure centre. A five-minute walk in the other direction is Chelmsford railway station with trains to London Liverpool Street in 35 minutes or the beaches of Clacton-on-Sea in just under an hour.

“So far we have sold over half of the first phase of apartments with many buyers purchasing their first homes and stepping onto the property ladder.

“The availability of schemes like Help to Buy and the stamp duty holiday have also been a draw. As the first completions at Novello are scheduled for the end of the year, buying now could mean a brand new start in a brand new home for 2021.”

Help to Buy allows people to buy a new-build home with a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage, with the remaining 20 per cent provided in the form of a Government-backed equity loan. The scheme is currently available to first-time buyers and existing homeowners, but will be limited to first-time buyers after March next year.

Luke Robbertse, 33, has already reserved his dream two-bedroom home at Novello after renting a one-bedroom apartment nearby for over two and a half years.

He said: “I have been renting ever since I left home, so for 12 years I have been paying off other people’s mortgages and I thought it was about time I started paying for my own. I like living in Chelmsford and I feel settled here.

“The Novello development is in a brilliant location. It is close to where I work, and it’s only a couple of minutes away from a leisure centre. There are some beautiful green spaces around too. It’s also only five minutes from the train station and the High Street, so it is all very convenient.

“The development is so close to everything that I won’t need to buy a car, which will save me a lot of money – and it’s healthier walking and cycling everywhere.”

One and two-bedroom apartments are currently available at Novello, with prices starting from £254,995.
