Newcastle architect’s designs on £2m dream home gets planning green light

Planning permission

Plans by Newcastle architect’s Pod for a stunning £2m luxury home near Middlesbrough, which will include a swimming pool and entertainment complex, have been approved.

The move is the latest phase of an ambitious design by Toffee Factory-based Pod for a six-bedroomed property in Nunthorpe, which has been considered by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s planning committee.

Approval is the culmination of months of work by the architects, which has worked closely with the developer to finalise designs for a 12,500 sq. ft. brick and glass constructed two-storey building, which will replace an existing dwelling.

Also set to feature is a grand central staircase, atrium and gallery space to enable access to all rooms. The site has been exclusively designed by Pod to accommodate a steeply sloping site and provide extensive views over the North Yorkshire Moors.

These requirements were key drivers during the design stage, said Pod’s Project Architect and Director Martin Clay, who added that considerable thought had been given to concealing the leisure areas, enabling the house to sit sensitively within a wooded clearing.

“It’s testament to our design excellence that a potentially difficult planning case, due to scale, landscape and proximity to a national park, has created a solution that’s been praised by the planning officer and a fundamental reason why planning’s been approved.

“Pod goes from strength-to-strength on the back of a strong client base and an impressive portfolio of work. The opportunity to work for high-profile individuals is always one that we would welcome as a creatively-driven practice.”

Pod was established by Craig and Ruth Van Bedaf in 2007 and provides a range of architectural and design services. It currently employs 12 staff at its office in the Toffee Factory, Newcastle, and undertakes residential work, primarily with large regional housebuilders across the North of England. These include national housebuilders Bellway and Storey Homes, as well as Northumberland Estates.
