COAT Paints B Corp Certification

COAT Paints becomes a B Corp Certified Paint Company – strengthening its ‘anti-greenwash’ stance on environmental and social impact and cementing its position as a Climate positive paint.

Since launching COAT in 2020, founders Rob Abrahams and Rob Green have been driven to transform the outdated paint industry for the modern consumer, creating a business that, at its heart, doesn’t further contribute to the climate emergency but creates a better way for people to act regeneratively for the planet.

COAT has been recognised through B Corp Certification for their significant and tangible environmental and social practices, and as a regenerative business, creating a net positive impact.

“The process isn’t easy.” says Rob Green, COAT co-founder. “We’ve been working for over a year to meet the rigorous B Impact Assessment criteria, which takes a deep-dive into every area of the COAT business. Happily COAT has been leading the way in our industry since launch, so things like offsetting by 200% our Scope 1-3 carbon emissions, and operating a 360-degree closed loop recycling system all contributed to an overwhelmingly positive score in the end.”

The company has taken a challenger stance on what it means to be a paint company. From dismissing wasteful paint tester pots in favour of recyclable Peel & Stick swatches, COAT is cutting typical paint waste by 95%. Swatches are painted in real COAT paint, so are 100% accurate and mess-free for customers at home too.

With a 100% Low-VOC Water-Based paint range, regenerative bamboo painting supplies, 100% recycled and recyclable packaging, and carbon-neutral delivery partners – COAT is miles ahead of most on face value.

“Our aim is to create a better world, for our generation and the next” says Rob Abrahams, co-founder at COAT. “Climate change isn’t news to anyone, but I think the speed of change has shocked lots of us in really material ways. This crazy heat in July and August, for one. We ride or die by facts at COAT and being B Corp Certified is exactly that – it’s numbers and actions that make our approach both industry-leading, and entirely tangible”.

But COAT believes the real significant positive change they stand for isn’t glamorous, and lives largely behind the scenes at the company. Perhaps the most impactful difference to other players is that COAT has shunned the typical wholesale production model in favour of a “Just In Time” system. That means that the company mixes paint exclusively to customer order, meaning there is no waste generated from over supply. In fact, most of the paint industry’s waste comes from manufacturer over-production, not consumers.

Similarly impactful is COAT’s approach to Carbon Offsetting. It’s relatively easy to be Carbon Neutral, which means offsetting Scope 1-2 carbon emissions. These emissions are entirely in the company’s control (e.g., their office, their travel policies etc) but don’t take account of supply chains. For an online business for example, Scope 1-2 emissions are likely very small. COAT has taken full responsibility for Scope 3 carbon emissions, which means the company has measured and offset the unavoidable emissions of their supply chain by 200%.

COAT is the only paint company to offer recycling returns to their customers. Customers can return any empty tins or dregs of paint directly to COAT, who reprocess and recycle 100%. There is zero sent to landfill. This end of life approach, in tandem with a zero-waste production system, puts COAT firmly at the forefront of innovation when it comes to environmental impact reduction.
