Bird Home Automation GmbH, the Berlin-based tech start-up, has transformed the door communication industry since launching its DoorBird product line in 2014. Founded on the principles of high-quality engineering and innovation, DoorBird has grown from a small Berlin operation to a world-leading provider of smart door intercom systems, supported by a global market presence and an unwavering commitment to the ‘Made in Germany’ standard.
Initially conceived on Berlin’s Joachimsthaler Straße, the DoorBird brand was developed with a mission to allow users to speak with and remotely open doors for visitors, regardless of their location. By autumn 2014, DoorBird had introduced its first models featuring HD cameras, night vision, motion sensors, Wi-Fi, and multiple connectivity options. This comprehensive feature set gave DoorBird an early edge, attracting its first US customer in Florida just before Christmas 2014, quickly followed by sales within Germany.
Far from resting on its laurels, Bird Home Automation expanded the DoorBird range to meet rising demand for high-quality intercom solutions. The company introduced models with stainless steel designs for flush or surface mounting, as well as accessory products like additional cameras and alarms. Over the past decade, DoorBird’s product catalogue has expanded to an impressive 2,300 offerings, with customers in 161 countries—a testament to its broad, customer-oriented approach.
Despite its global success, DoorBird has maintained its roots in Berlin, where the company designs, tests, and manufactures all products. This commitment to in-house production ensures rigorous quality control and the distinctive reliability associated with German engineering. By offering a well-documented API, DoorBird products easily integrate with other smart home devices, making it a favourite among users who appreciate flexibility in their home automation setups. The company’s DoorBird Connect network now includes over 80 integration partners, enabling seamless connections with other smart systems, from garage doors to door locks.
Early on, DoorBird’s founders identified the United States as a critical market, showcasing their products at a US trade fair in January 2015. This strategic foresight led to the establishment of an office in San Francisco later that year, placing DoorBird at the heart of Silicon Valley. In 2021, DoorBird further strengthened its American footprint with a new location in Jacksonville, Florida, to provide better service to East Coast customers.
As demand continues to grow, DoorBird has adapted to serve large-scale projects, including hotels, commercial properties, and residential complexes. In 2022, Bird Home Automation joined the ASSA ABLOY Group, the global leader in locking and security systems, positioning DoorBird as a top player in IP door communication solutions. Through this partnership, DoorBird aims to continue innovating, developing products that meet the evolving needs of customers worldwide, while remaining steadfastly dedicated to quality and reliability—always made with pride in Berlin.
