Shirley Browne on creating a penthouse show apartment, overlooking the Olympic Stadium in Stratford

The Olympics 2012 is exciting for the UK as a whole and especially to those that live and work in London. Even more exciting was the opportunity for Shirley Browne Interiors to create a penthouse show apartment, overlooking the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. Lett Road, designed and built by the Thornsett Group, is a highly innovative building that consists of 64 one, two, three bedroom apartments and penthouses, set right in the heart of the redevelopment of Stratford. The building is in close proximity to the forthcoming Eurostar terminal and Westfield City as well as offering unparalleled views of the stadium from the communal roof garden. Thornsett’s Sales and Marketing Director, Bernadette Cunningham wanted a bright, modern scheme and with such an exciting site, our instant inspiration came from the unique shape of the building, as well as the themes and colours of the Olympics themselves ; the colours of the rings, medals and of course Team GB! We didn’t want to theme the design, so the references were generally more subtle. In the Living Room you can clearly see this. We created some bespoke pieces of unusually shaped furniture in high gloss colours, mixed with the designer dining chairs and multi coloured rug to bring everything together. We even included a Banksy style framed print and a chrome Mini Cooper for that English/London touch, as well as showing that London is still a leading city for art and design. Again in the master bedroom, brightly coloured gloss furniture and interesting textiles were used to continue the theme. The pieces of artwork in this room were actual vintage prints from previous Olympic games. The second bedroom was the ode to the medal colours, with the gold lamps, silver headboard and the bronze cushion and accessories. The third bedroom was really our nod to London and Team GB with a twist. We didn’t want the obvious red white and blue, so decided on the bright splashes of colour this time on the bed itself, with the monochrome Union Jacks on the cushions and bedsides. It was a great project to work on, says Ed O’Donnell, Design Manager at Shirley Browne Interiors, firstly as everyone has been so positive about the finished product, but also feeling part of the regeneration of this area and the Olympics. We wanted to create a fun, modern looking environment that showed off this iconic building to it’s best advantage and I believe that we have achieved that.
