As part of their continued dedication to sustainable manufacturing, British kitchen manufacturer, Moores Furniture Group, have implemented a series of energy-saving changes as part of their strategic roadmap.

To meet their ambitious target of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2025, upgrades have been made to the factory and office space to reduce carbon emissions. Changing more than 2000 standard light bulbs to smart LED’s and updating the old boiler to a brand new one that runs on biomass fuel has resulted in a reduction of 410 tonnes of carbon (CO2e).

The £2,000,000 biomass boiler is central to the sustainability roadmap, reinforcing the company’s zero waste to landfill since 2011 commitment by utilising the wood waste from kitchen production lines and recycling into biomass fuel to provide heat for the 600,000sq/ft site.

Since 2014, Moores have removed 57% of their Scope 1, 2 & 3 (direct & indirect) carbon impact, resulting in a total reduction of 16,367 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (tCO2e), with equates to planting a phenomenal 98,200 trees. However, there is still much more in the pipeline for Moores, including plans for a full fleet of plug-in hybrid cars by 2030, and continually educating their workforce in sustainable practise.

To support this initiative, Moores recently enrolled a number of  employees on the Supply Chain Sustainability School training programme. The main aim of the programme is to upskill and create a knowledgeable team to lead Moores’ Sustainability strategy and drive forward greener practises throughout the company. The trainees will actively navigate through the human elements of sustainability, including equality, wellbeing, and employee engagement, as well as taking part in self-assessments to develop the company’s procurement procedures.

Kevin Bell, Health and Safety Manager at Moores comments: “With guidance from The Supply Chain Sustainability School we will be in a better position to align ourselves with the greatest levels of sustainable practice and integrate these learnings into our sustainability roadmap.

The successful implementation of their sustainability strategy so far, combined with their exciting future ambitions, will help pave the way for Moores to become an industry example of greener manufacturing.
