UK roofing manufacturer Russell Roof Tiles has supplied 1,400 concrete roof tiles and fittings to support a family home renovation featured on the BBC television programme DIY SOS.
The company worked with S Whelan Roofing and Building Ltd after the roofing contractor’s original supplier withdrew at the last minute, helping the project remain on schedule.
The renovation took place in Freckleton, Preston, where a family was preparing to welcome home their teenage son Daniel following nearly three years in hospital after lifesaving brain surgery.
Roofing materials support eight day renovation
The DIY SOS team, supported by local tradespeople and S Whelan Roofing and Building Ltd, transformed the family’s property from a two bedroom bungalow into a four bedroom home.
The renovation was completed within eight days, providing additional living space for the family.
Russell Roof Tiles donated 1,400 tiles and fittings from its newly launched Bute3 concrete roof tile range, helping the roofing team complete its work despite the earlier supply difficulties.
Bute3 roof tiles designed for faster installation
The Bute3 product combines the appearance of three traditional plain tiles with a standard interlocking format.
According to Russell Roof Tiles, the design enables installation to be completed 33% faster than comparable small format, thinner leading edge roofing products.
The manufacturer spent five years designing, engineering and developing the product, with installation efficiency forming a central consideration.
Supporting community renovation projects
First broadcast in 1999, DIY SOS brings together building professionals, local tradespeople and volunteers to renovate homes for families requiring additional support.
Russell Roof Tiles’ contribution helped the roofing contractor meet the programme’s demanding construction schedule.
The project demonstrates how collaboration between manufacturers and contractors can support residential renovation work when unexpected supply challenges arise.
The completed property provides the family with additional accommodation ahead of Daniel’s return home.
Shaun Whelan at S Whelan Roofing and Building Ltd, said: “After being told that we would be the first contractor to use the Bute3® tile, we were a little apprehensive.
“However, after we had a lengthy chat with the Russell Roof Tiles team and saw the product first-hand, we were confident the roof was going to look great.
“We actually found the Bute3® tile system easy and very quick to install. This was important, as time was of the essence, but the Bute3® tile covered a large area quickly.”
Gordon McKinnon, Sales Executive in the North West at Russell Roof Tiles, said: “We are delighted to have been a part of such an incredible project which has made a real difference for the family involved.
“When the contractor informed us of the tight deadline, we knew that Bute3® would be the perfect choice. Our tile provided a high-quality, reliable roof for the family in a short space of time and we are very happy with the final result.
“We would like to thank North West Roofing Supplies for its assistance throughout the process and supplying roofing batten free of charge to the project, and DIY SOS and S Whelan for placing their trust in us,” Gordon added.
