Cornish developer Treveth has celebrated its third anniversary by moving into its new office in Truro in response to its rapid expansion.

Since its launch in 2019, Treveth has been building high-quality new build homes, sustainable communities, and commercial developments in partnership with Cornwall Council to benefit people who live and work in Cornwall.

The housebuilder and commercial property developer has accomplished rapid growth over the last three years despite having to navigate its way through a global pandemic shortly after it was established. Treveth now has five times the number of staff in 2023 than it did in 2019, growing from six to 30 employees, and has significantly grown its property portfolio in both the commercial and residential markets.

Playing its part in shaping Cornwall’s communities and places positively to benefit local people, Treveth now manages 78 properties across three developments and 45 units across six commercial sites. Building homes for people who live, work in or have family connections in the immediate vicinity of its sites, Treveth currently has 330 new homes in build across three active sites in Cornwall and a further 700 units either in planning or recently consented.

Founded by Cornwall Council, Treveth was established to improve the quality of private rented accommodation and to increase the availability of homes across the rental, shared ownership and private rental sectors. The Truro-based developer operates under a ‘Profit with Purpose’ ethos and has enjoyed several milestones since its launch.

It has successfully managed and sold properties inherited from Cornwall Council which now boast thriving communities. These include Heathlands View, Bodmin; The Coppers, Tolvaddon and Tregover, Newquay.

In 2021, Treveth launched its first new homes scheme, Gwel Basset at Tolgus, Redruth. This is a market leading, low carbon estate housing scheme, with all 185 new build homes at this site designed to meet challenging energy saving targets set by the industry for 2030. Shortly after its launch, Gwel Basset welcomed its first cohort of 10 students to the Gwel Basset Academy established by Vistry Partnerships. The centre provides training, work placements, apprenticeships, and full-time employment to local people to encourage skills into the construction industry.

In December 2021, Treveth completed on the purchase of its first commercial industrial units and sites from Cornwall Council. Included in the purchase was 45 tenanted industrial units, yards and several pieces of land for future development, located in Bodmin, Falmouth, Helston and Redruth. This was followed by securing planning for the refurbishment of a commercial unit in Pool, West Cornwall, Treveth’s first unit that planning permission has been granted for.

Treveth is also the development manager for the proposed transformation of the Pydar Street area of Truro into a vibrant new neighbourhood and destination. The £160m project will see 320 new homes, space for up to 400 students, cafes, restaurants, nature trails, a hotel and other leisure, hospitality and cultural facilities.

In April 2022, outline planning permission was granted for Langarth Garden Village, a flagship garden village which Treveth is currently acting as Advisor and Development Manager for Cornwall Council. The vision is to provide 3,600 homes, two primary schools, a park and ride extension, energy centre, key utilities and large areas safeguarding green and community spaces.

Solidifying its position as a developer which builds and manages high-quality affordable homes, Treveth launched its own housing association, Perran Housing, in October 2022. Falling under Treveth’s corporate umbrella, Perran Housing ensures Treveth is responsible for managing all tenure-blind housing on its sites with a single management and maintenance process to guarantee all schemes are maintained to the highest quality, offering the same service to affordable and private tenants.

Spearheading Treveth’s expansion is Managing Director, Tim Mulholland.

Tim commented: “I can’t believe we have celebrated Treveth’s third anniversary already. I’m so proud of the team and our sincere thanks to all our partners and stakeholders who have supported our exciting journey. We’ve celebrated some significant milestones and continued to expand, despite the construction industry temporarily coming to a halt in 2020. We quickly outgrew our old office space and are now enjoying a modern, cleverly designed office on Pydar Street in Truro. With sustainability at the heart of what we do, we really wanted our new office space to reflect our values, so we have specifically used sustainably sourced timber alongside real planting, all delivered by local contractors. The old carpet tiles have been reused in offices elsewhere and have been replaced with flooring which is made of 62% recycled content and manufactured using 100% renewable energy.

“We’ve definitely made some positive inroads over the last three years, but there’s so much more to come. We recognise that there is a desperate need for housing in Cornwall for local people, particularly in the private rental sector. Treveth is committed to improving the quality of new build homes in the region and providing more new homes for local people who really need them. To address the alarming problem of second homeownership in Cornwall, we give those who live, work or have family connections in the immediate vicinity of our site priority.

“Whilst delivering on our promise to bring more high-quality new homes to the region to address the housing crisis, we need to ensure that our developments are sustainable and energy-efficient, futureproofing homes for generations to come. The houses that are being constructed at Treveth sites are already designed to achieve ambitious 2030 targets and are well-connected to help reduce the reliance on cars, ensuring that local people can live a low carbon lifestyle with little effort.

“With a clear strategy in place to grow our portfolio of residential and commercial properties, we look forward to the years to come.”
