A conversation with Nathan Garnett, UK Construction Week Event Director on what the upcoming UKCW event will offer.
1. What will UK Construction Week offer? What are the expectations of this event?
UK Construction Week London has a fantastic variety of building products and innovations on offer for anyone involved in the construction of homes.
We have more packed in than ever before with more than 300 exhibitors (600 including co-located shows), 10,000 products, 300 expert speakers, 150 hours of CPD content and activities, and seven theatre stages with multiple specialist hubs including the Sustainability Hub, Innovation Zone, Offsite Hub, Infrastructure Hub,
There will be a huge amount of thought leadership and workshops as we look to update the industry on all the latest regulations around building quality, safety, and sustainability. There is a lot going on in the industry at the moment and these changes will have a fundamental effect on how we build homes in the future, so it has never been more important to share that knowledge. There will also be ample chances to network, whether through our buyer and supplier meeting programme, awards, or parties in our new central bar.
- How have you planned to make this event as COVID-19 safe as possible?
We are working closely with ExCeL London on our COVID strategy, and as the ExCeL was a nightingale hospital, it is very well versed in the protocols to keep people safe. It also has a brand-new air circulation system.
We will be asking all visitors to take a LFT before they come to the event and will be conducting spot checks for vaccine status. There will also be plenty of space so those who wish to social distance will be able to do so.
- How long do you expect the event to last and what type of events will there be?
UKCW London takes place over three days (3-5 May) with evening social events for visitors to join in the early evening on Tuesday 3 May and Wednesday 4 May.
Day one will include updates on the new rules around public procurement, the new regulatory regime on building safety, the forthcoming Building Safety Act, and the completely new ways in which the industry works on projects as wide ranging as prisons, hospitals, road and rail infrastructure, education buildings and housing. Day two will be a deep dive into digitalisation, net zero and energy futures, and day three will focus on people, including diversity, health and wellbeing, recruitment, and retention issues.
We have several award shows taking place also, with our UKCW Role Models award shortlist to be announced, which recognises talented professionals across all areas of construction and aims to inspire others into similar roles. There will also be the Fix Radio Tradesperson of the Year awards for the country’s leading and most innovative tradesmen and women.
