A Bedford-based Site Manager has been promoted to Contracts Manager for leading homebuilder, David Wilson Homes, after working his way up the company ladder.

The keen rugby player, Nic Coupland (42), began his career with the developer as a labourer in 2000 after working in engineering for most of his life.

Since starting at the company, Nic has worked as a forklift truck driver, Assistant Site Manager and Site Manager before being promoted to Trainee Contracts Manager in February this year, placing him in charge of a number of developments across Bedfordshire.

Nic said, “I’d heard that David Wilson Homes had a great reputation for promoting from within, so I went for an interview and started life as a labourer. The company is at the forefront of new technology and is always striving to find new products and new methods of construction which is an extremely rewarding process to be a part of.

“My new role as a Trainee Contracts Manager is quite challenging as I have to combine the work I do at head office with the time I spend on site, but I’m really enjoying the versatility of it. Every day is different with different challenges to face, and it’s satisfying when you overcome them.”

A top apprentice employer, David Wilson Homes is part of Barratt Developments, which has created more than 3,000 new jobs at its sites across the country in the past year alone and has pledged to take on 1,100 apprentices, graduates and trainees over the next three years, in addition to the 600 trainees already recruited since February 2013.

Nic continued, “If I had to offer any advice to youngsters looking to join the construction industry I’d say, although apprenticeships may seem like hard work they’re well worth doing and there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the finished product of something you’ve been working on, knowing you’ve played an active role in its creation.”

A well-established homebuilder, David Wilson Homes prides itself on creating exceptional homes in the finest locations and recently achieved the maximum five star rating run by the Home Builders Federation for a fifth consecutive year.
