On Friday 26th January, NHBC celebrated the success, skill and exceptional achievements of site managers who are building the next generation of the UK’s housing stock. After months of deliberation the finalists of NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards 2017 were announced at a gala dinner to an industry audience of over 700 people, hosted by Jonathan Ross with special guest comedian Romesh Ranganathan.
The NHBC Pride in the Job Awards is the only UK-wide competition honouring site managers whose dedicated work onsite delivering high quality homes and contributing to the housing stock this country so desperately needs. The four Supreme Winners of the Small, Medium, Large and Multi-Storey categories competed against 16,000 site managers, in a rigorous judging process that began in July 2016 involving around 400 judges assessing sites throughout the build process.
This is Pride in the Job’s 37th year, and is operated by NHBC, the UK’s leading warranty provider and standards setter for new homes, which covers around 80 percent of the new home warranty market. The competition is highly competitive, with each site manager going above and beyond basic standards in order to achieve high marks across 44 areas of construction and site management. Winning Pride in the Job sites has proven to produce high quality homes with increased homeowner satisfaction.

The winners are:
- Nigel Smith of Darren Smith Homes won the Small Builder category for St Pauls Lock in Mirfield. Nigel is highly experienced having worked in construction industry for 33 years, and as a site manager for 28 years. This was his first regional award and his first time in the supreme awards.
- Stuart Gillespie of Mactaggart & Mickel Homes was named as the Medium Builder category winner for his site in Ayr. He came close last year winning the Runner-up title, making this a fantastic achievement.
- Stephan Kirwan of St George City took the Multi-storey Builder category title for managing the build of for the exclusive One Blackfriars development in Southwark. Stephan has worked in the building industry for 25 years.
- Henry Patecki of David Wilson Homes East Midlands won the Large Builder category for his site in Leicester. Henry’s career with David Wilson Homes started 19 years ago.

“Site management is a tough challenge, requiring incredible attention to detail to ensure that work is done safely, on time, within budget and crucially that attention to quality remains the focus of attention throughout the build process. The quality of this year’s Pride in the Job Award winners was extremely high and I would like to congratulate everybody recognised in the 2017 competition. Particular praise goes to the Supreme winners who beat an incredible number of others to win the title, and can be proud to be among the best in Britain.
“With NHBC’s 2017 UK new home registration statistics showing an increase of 6% on the previous year, it is ever more important to celebrate the efforts site managers go to promoting continuous improvement in the quality of new homes.”

- Multi-storey – Mark Pinder – Midgard Ltd- Newbury Racecourse, Berkshire
- Medium – Steve Walker – C G Fry & Son – Poundbury, Dorchester
- Small – John Greggain – L Greggain & Co – Myrtle Meadows, Pembrokeshire
