Research found that in 2021, approximately 35 million pumpkins were purchased for Halloween in the UK. Almost half of those ended up in landfill, where they rot and release harmful methane gas into the atmosphere.

As part of its ongoing efforts to encourage the uptake of eco-friendly practices for the future of the planet and with Google searches for ‘how to repurpose a pumpkin’ skyrocketing by 154% in the past month, InSinkErator is sharing helpful advice this Halloween to support consumer’s efforts in reducing food waste.

As an active campaigner for the prevention of food waste, and encouraging its disposal sustainably, InSinkErator has collaborated with Bettina Campolucci Bordi, a chef who specialises in sustainable cooking. After publishing three vegan cookbooks and hosting cooking retreats all over the world, Bettina has amassed a loyal following, including over 135,000 Instagram followers, who are kept up to date with tasty recipes and meal inspiration. As part of the collaboration with InSinkErator, Bettina has created an easy-to-follow recipe, Pumpkin Gnocchi, offering a solution to families who are unsure of what to do with their leftover Halloween pumpkins. Featured in the recipe video is an InSinkErator food waste disposer and specialist kitchen tap, which Bettina demonstrates during the cooking process to raise awareness of the convenient kitchen products with consumers, driving demand for InSinkErator trade partners too.

Further advice from InSinkErator includes utilising pumpkin flesh for a pamper session, making pet treats and feeding local wildlife. As a last resort, InSinkErator advises composting unused pumpkins wherever possible. Where this isn’t feasible, an InSinkErator food waste disposer is the ideal alternative for diverting pumpkin waste from landfill.

Jamie Griffin, Digital Marketing and Ecommerce Manager, EMEA, InSinkErator, says: “The sheer number of pumpkins ending up in landfill after Halloween is shocking and we all need to do our bit to reduce this figure. It’s important that food is used to its full potential before composting or being ground into particles by our food waste disposers. We are supporting consumers by providing hints and tips to make the most out of their pumpkins, reduce the effect on the environment and encourage the uptake of sustainable practices going forward.”

InSinkErator invented the food waste disposer over 90 years ago and today has a range of models, designed to suit different family sizes and home cooking needs. The top-of-the-range Evolution 250 food waste disposer, exclusively available from kitchen specialists, boasts a high-torque Dura-Drive induction motor to tackle the most difficult-to-grind foods and benefits from overload protection and an auto-reverse action, which makes for trouble free operation and an extended lifecycle.

The InSinkErator portfolio also boasts an elegant collection of specialist kitchen taps, in a variety of on-trend finishes, that can minimise water waste, save energy and reduce single-use plastic waste. The premium 4N1 Touch tap from InSinkErator safely dispenses filtered steaming hot water, filtered cold water and regular hot and cold water from one combined fixture.
