Meadfleet were awarded the Landscape Institute’s Landscape Legacy Award in November 2022 for Sustainable Open Space Management. The award celebrates Meadfleet’s achievements in creating a sustainable legacy throughout the business and across its portfolio both in their work to provide biodiverse open spaces and through community engagement and educational projects.

David King, Managing Director of Meadfleet commented: “We are honoured to have been presented with this prestigious award from the Landscape Institute and were thrilled the judges recognised our commitment to going beyond the usual scope of an open space management company. We will continue to create a legacy of biodiverse green spaces for customers, the local community and for wildlife whilst inspiring and educating the next generation in caring for their natural environment.”

In this year’s awards there were a record breaking 225 entrants and a panel of 93 judges made the difficult decision to select the best 24 entries.  The category of ‘Landscape Legacy’ celebrates a person, group or organisation committed to leaving a lasting landscape legacy to the world. Below is one of the judges’ comments on Meadfleet’s submission:

“A strong and demonstrable commitment to a positive environmental, community and educational legacy, not only via the projects themselves, but also by passing on the knowledge in inspiring future generations.”

The Landscape Institute awards are open to submissions from the UK and overseas and are presented to ‘individuals and organisations whose vision and practice leads the way in the landscape profession’.

Building on the success of the last two years’ virtual events, which attracted over 1,600 attendees combined, this year’s winners were announced at a hybrid event at Troxy, London in November. The hybrid format allowed attendees to join physically and virtually from all over the world.

Judges from bodies such as Historic England, Royal Horticulture Society and the Scottish Government selected 24 winners from a 75-project shortlist that featured developments from across the globe.

Presented by botanist and TV presenter James Wong with keynote speeches from Acting President Noel Farrer, Immediate Past President Jane Finlay and LI’s Chief Executive, Sue Morgan, the awards showcased the best in sustainable and resilient design.

“The UK Government published its long-awaited Levelling Up White Paper which reflected that landscapes, green spaces and the built environment will be instrumental to levelling up the country,” said Sue Morgan, Landscape Institute’s CEO. “The awards this year celebrate landscape architects across the globe who are implementing this holistic vision. Winners, particularly in Scotland, this year highlight how landscaping with community and sustainability in mind are now becoming commonplace to ensure the greater resilience of projects.”

Awards were divided into professional, open and student categories, along with three separate accolades, including the President’s Award which is supported by headline sponsor Hardscape, a paving materials supplier.

A host of sponsors once again supported the Landscape Institute awards this year, which in addition to category sponsors included: Vestre, Furnitubes, Maylim, Civic Engineers, GreenBlue Urban, Marshalls, AG, Green-tech, MFL Insurance Group, Selux, Tobermore, Boughton, WoodBlocX, Pegasus Group, and supporters Tilhill, Stone World Oxfordshire Ltd, and Provender Nurseries.
