A plan by the North Devon Council to fork out half a million pounds on emergency housing for the homeless families residing in North Devon is set to go before councillors next week.

On January the 8th, the executive committee will be given the choice whether they will approve recommendations to spend £541,591 in order to purchase property in order to provide temporary accommodation for those unfortunate enough to have nowhere to live.

Back in August, the council had spent over £138,000 in order to provide bed and breakfast accommodations for 38 households between January and June 2017, with the council splashing out £63,072.52 to Travelodge alone.

Speaking about the matter, Dick Jones, a member for housing, insisted that they’re not trying to step on anyone’s toes, and just want to help people who need it.

Dick Jones and Brian Moores are the members for housing. Mr Jones said: “We are not trying to take the place of North Devon Homes, we are trying to support what they provide, for those people who fall through the net.

“We want a small stock of properties for people that need help and look after them until they can move on to better things.”
