A project that is directly responsible for the radical improvement of energy efficiency in 10 homes in Sneinton, Nottingham, has won a UK housing Award for Innovation of the Year.

Ran by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, the UK Housing Awards are referred to as “the Oscars of the housing world” and celebrate the best the sector has to offer.

Nottingham City Homes’ won the Innovation Award, which was given to them on the basis of their determined approach to tacking energy inefficiency in older housing stock, as they tried to address both fuel poverty and climate change.

In addition, the Landlord of the Year and Outstanding Approach to Tenant Involvement awards both went to Nottingham City Homes’ arms’ length management organisation (ALMO), who both manage and maintain the council homes of Nottingham City Council.

By winning the three awards, it has become apparent that Nottingham as a whole are embracing new ideas, and that the tenant led Nottingham City Homes are making a significant impact on the lives of tenants.

Nottingham City Homes is also the first housing organisation in the country to take on board and implement a ground-breaking approach, which is known as Energiesprong.

Simplified, the Netherlands based Energiesprong basically upgrades a home with brand new outside walls and windows, a state of the art heating system, and a solar roof. All of this dramatically reduces household energy bills, and also makes homes both healthier and warmer for the residents.
